The Menton Lemon Festival is one of the biggest events on the French Riviera. It features incredible sculptures and floats made out of lemons and oranges. Menton is at the heart of the Cote d’Azure citrus industry … and the festival celebrates the year’s harvest.
Known to locals as the Fête du Citron, this is a unique event, annually attracting over 230,000 visitors. In 2013 it is being held between February 16th and March 6th.
It involves more than 300 people and requires 145 tons of citrus fruits. The annual International Orchid Festival and Menton Craft Fair are both held at Menton’s Palais de l’Europe at the same time as the Menton Lemon Festival.
Of course traffic in Menton is chaotic during the festival and the local hotels are booked months in advance. But there is an easier way … which is to take the train from Grasse train station direct to Menton. The journey takes about an hour and there are double-decker sightseeing trains every hour.
